Who is IRATA Level 1 training for?
This course is the starting point for people new to industrial rope access and tradespeople who need another way to reach their work. Rope access can support inspection, non-destructive testing, electrical work, maintenance, rigging and painting. Your trade skills and the requirements of the job remain important: a rope access certificate provides an access qualification rather than a separate trade qualification.
You do not need a previous IRATA certificate to begin at Level 1. You should be ready for an active week, comfortable learning at height and willing to follow instructions carefully. Small classes at True Mettle help trainers give attention to individual learning needs.
What you will learn
- Equipment awareness: identifying rope access equipment, understanding its purpose and limitations, and carrying out the checks taught during training.
- Knots and rope handling: developing the core rope work and rigging knowledge required at Level 1.
- Rope manoeuvres: practising ascent, descent, changeovers, rope transfers and passing common obstructions in a supervised training environment.
- Structural climbing: learning the relevant climbing, work positioning and fall protection principles within the Level 1 syllabus.
- Basic rescue: practising the simple rescue skills required for assessment.
- Theory and safe working: understanding the role of the technician, the Level 3 supervisor, equipment care and the importance of a planned rope access system.
Training combines demonstrations, practical repetition and feedback. The aim is to build safe, consistent habits and an understanding of why each skill matters, rather than simply memorising a sequence for assessment.
Entry requirements and preparation
Candidates must be at least 18 and able to participate safely in practical training. IRATA requires a declaration of medical fitness; discuss any concerns with the centre before booking so the appropriate requirements can be checked. Ask us what identification, clothing and personal items to bring, and confirm equipment arrangements before your course.
Start with our Level 1 training video library to become familiar with the terminology and topics. Videos support your preparation and revision; practical skills must be learned with qualified supervision.
Course duration, assessment and certification
True Mettle lists a five-day programme including independent IRATA assessment. Expect a practical training week with assessment on the scheduled final day; confirm the exact dates when registering. The assessment checks your practical skills and understanding of Level 1 theory.
Certification is subject to meeting IRATA’s full requirements and approval. Initial certification includes a certificate, identification card and logbook. Certification normally runs for three years, with revalidation training and assessment required to renew it. A Level 1 technician works under the supervision of an IRATA Level 3 safety supervisor.
