Who should take the Level 2 course?

This course is for IRATA Level 1 technicians who have developed solid working experience and want to take the next step in the certification scheme. It builds on the techniques learned at Level 1, with greater emphasis on rigging, rescue and the practical judgement needed to carry out more complex tasks.

Working hours should bring useful experience, not just a number in a logbook. Exposure to different rope access environments helps you understand how skills connect to real work. You should arrive able to perform the practical techniques and explain the theory expected at your current level.

Level 2 entry requirements

  • Hold a Level 1 certificate that is valid on the upgrade assessment date.
  • Have at least 1,000 rope access working hours at Level 1, recorded and correctly verified in your IRATA logbook.
  • Meet IRATA’s minimum experience interval: the earliest upgrade assessment is one year and one day after the previous assessment.
  • Be competent in Level 1 practical skills and theory and able to participate safely in training.
  • Bring your logbook and certification details for review at the start of the course.

Contact True Mettle before booking if your certificate has expired, your logbook is missing or you are unsure whether your experience meets the upgrade criteria. These situations need individual review rather than an assumption that a standard upgrade is suitable.

What you will learn at Level 2

  • Level 1 proficiency: refining core rope manoeuvres and applying them consistently in more demanding situations.
  • Enhanced rigging: developing a broader understanding of rope systems, equipment selection and the reasoning behind suitable arrangements.
  • Rescue from ascenders: building the rescue competence required by the Level 2 syllabus.
  • Rescue through manoeuvres: practising scenarios involving aid climbing, deviations, re-anchors and rope transfers.
  • Hauling and lowering: developing casualty-handling skills through supervised exercises.
  • Equipment care: selection, inspection, maintenance and recognising limitations.
  • Level 2 theory: connecting practical decisions to rope access principles and safe working responsibilities.

The course is mainly practical. Demonstrations, repetition and trainer feedback help you develop clear, controlled techniques and identify areas that need more work before assessment.

Duration and independent assessment

True Mettle’s programme is five days including independent IRATA assessment. Confirm the exact timetable for the dates you select. Assessment is separate from your training and evaluates the skills and understanding required for Level 2. Completing a course does not guarantee a pass or certification; all IRATA certification requirements must be met.

Level 2 certification is valid for three years and requires revalidation training and assessment to renew. Level 2 technicians continue to work under an IRATA Level 3 safety supervisor. Level 2 is an experienced technician grade, rather than the rope access safety supervisor qualification.

Level 2 questions

Are 1,000 hours enough on their own?

No. You also need the required experience interval, a valid certificate, properly verified logbook entries and competence at your existing level. Ask us to review your eligibility before you reserve a course.

Can Level 2 technicians supervise rope access safety?

That role requires Level 3 certification and suitable competence. The IRATA Level 3 course is the next progression step once you meet its requirements.

What if I need revalidation rather than an upgrade?

Tell the centre your current level and expiry date so we can advise on the right training and assessment route. See re-assessment information where applicable.
