Is Level 3 the right next step?

Level 3 is the highest technician grade in the IRATA scheme. It suits established Level 2 technicians who are ready to develop the skills and judgement needed to take responsibility for the safety of a rope access team. Progression requires more than time on the ropes: a strong grasp of earlier techniques, reliable rescue skills and an ability to plan and communicate clearly are essential.

The course builds on the foundations of Level 1 and the additional rigging and rescue skills covered in Level 2. Experience across different work environments helps candidates understand the decisions and responsibilities involved in supervision.

Level 3 entry requirements

  • Hold a Level 2 certificate that remains valid on your upgrade assessment date.
  • Have at least 1,000 correctly verified rope access working hours at Level 2 in your logbook.
  • Meet the required experience interval: an upgrade assessment can take place no earlier than one year and one day after your previous assessment.
  • Be proficient in the practical skills and theory required at Levels 1 and 2.
  • Hold an appropriate, current first-aid certificate for the Level 3 role; confirm suitability with the centre before attending.
  • Present your logbook and relevant certification for review and be able to participate safely in training.

If your certificate has expired, you have had a long break from rope access or your records are incomplete, contact the training team before booking. We can review the situation and identify the appropriate training and assessment route.

What the Level 3 course covers

  • Advanced rigging: applying a wider range of systems and evaluating their suitability for the task and environment.
  • Advanced rescue: refining rescue skills and working through demanding scenarios with an emphasis on planning and controlled execution.
  • Operational planning: considering access methods, team capabilities, equipment needs and foreseeable problems before work starts.
  • Risk assessment: identifying hazards and understanding how rope access safety measures fit into a planned operation.
  • Team responsibilities: supervision, communication and the practical demands of leading rope access safety.
  • Equipment knowledge: selection, inspection, care, maintenance and limitations.
  • Theory: relevant legislation, IRATA scheme knowledge and the principles that underpin safe rope access work.
  • Earlier-level proficiency: demonstrating the Level 1 and 2 skills that remain part of a Level 3 technician’s competence.

Practical sessions give candidates time to rehearse advanced techniques, receive feedback and connect rescue exercises with the planning decisions that support them. Training is intended to strengthen understanding as well as performance.

Training duration and assessment

True Mettle lists a five-day programme including independent IRATA assessment. Confirm the exact timetable and theory examination arrangements when booking. The Level 3 assessment includes practical skills and a theory examination. Review both elements in advance rather than concentrating only on rescue practice.

Attendance does not guarantee a pass or certification. IRATA grants certification once the full requirements and approval process have been satisfied. Level 3 certification is normally valid for three years; revalidation requires further training and assessment.

Understanding the Level 3 role

A Level 3 technician is capable of taking responsibility for rope access safety on work projects. Appropriate first aid, relevant experience and competence for the particular worksite remain important. Employers must consider the demands of each project when appointing a safety supervisor; a certificate alone does not remove that responsibility.
